1 Kings 19:9-18

The Lord Speaks to Elijah

⁹There he came to a cave and lodged in it. And behold, ^(A)the word of the Lord came to him, and he said to him, “What are you doing here, Elijah?” ¹⁰He said, “I have been very ^(B)jealous for the Lord, the God of hosts. For the people of Israel have forsaken your covenant, ^(C)thrown down your altars, and ^(D)killed your prophets with the sword, ^(E)and I, even I only, am left, and they seek my life, to take it away.” ¹¹And he said, “Go out and ^(F)stand on the mount before the Lord.” And behold, the Lord passed by, and ^(G)a great and strong wind tore the mountains and broke in pieces the rocks before the Lord, but the Lord was not in the wind. And after the wind ^(H)an earthquake, but the Lord was not in the earthquake. ¹²And after the earthquake a fire, but the Lord was not in the fire. And after the fire the sound of a low whisper.^[a] ¹³And when Elijah heard it, ^(I)he wrapped his face in his cloak and went out and stood at the entrance of the cave. And behold, ^(J)there came a voice to him and said, “What are you doing here, Elijah?” ¹⁴He said, ^(K)“I have been very jealous for the Lord, the God of hosts. For the people of Israel have forsaken your covenant, ^(L)thrown down your altars, and killed your prophets with the sword, and I, even I only, am left, and they seek my life, to take it away.” ¹⁵And the Lord said to him, “Go, return on your way to the wilderness of Damascus. And when you arrive, you shall anoint Hazael to be king over Syria. ¹⁶^(M)And Jehu the son of Nimshi you shall anoint to be king over Israel, and ^(N)Elisha the son of Shaphat of Abel-meholah you shall anoint to be prophet in your place. ¹⁷And the one who escapes from ^(O)the sword of Hazael ^(P)shall Jehu put to death, and the one who escapes from the sword of Jehu ^(Q)shall Elisha put to death. ¹⁸^(R)Yet I will leave seven thousand in Israel, all the knees that have not bowed to Baal, and every mouth that has not ^(S)kissed him.”

The Lord Is My Light and My Salvation

27 The Lord is my ^(A)light and my ^(B)salvation;
^(C)whom shall I fear?
The Lord is the stronghold^[a] of my life;
of whom shall I be afraid?

²When evildoers assail me
to ^(D)eat up my flesh,
my adversaries and foes,
it is they who stumble and fall.

³^(E)Though an army encamp against me,
my heart shall not fear;
though war arise against me,
yet^[b] I will be confident.

⁴^(F)One thing have I asked of the Lord,
    that will I seek after:
that I may ^(G)dwell in the house of the Lord
    all the days of my life,
to gaze upon ^(H)the beauty of the Lord
    and to inquire^[c] in his temple.

⁵For he will ^(I)hide me in his shelter
in the day of trouble;
he will conceal me under the cover of his tent;
he will ^(J)lift me high upon a rock.

⁶And now my ^(K)head shall be lifted up
above my enemies all around me,
and I will offer in his tent
sacrifices with shouts of ^(L)joy;
^(M)I will sing and make melody to the Lord.

⁷^(N)Hear, O Lord, when I cry aloud;
    be gracious to me and answer me!
⁸You have said, ^(O)“Seek^[d] my face.”
My heart says to you,
    “Your face, Lord, do I seek.”^[e]
⁹    ^(P)Hide not your face from me.
Turn not your servant away in anger,
    O you who have been my help.
Cast me not off; forsake me not,
    ^(Q)O God of my salvation!
¹⁰For ^(R)my father and my mother have forsaken me,
    but the Lord will ^(S)take me in.

¹¹^(T)Teach me your way, O Lord,
    and lead me on ^(U)a level path
    because of my enemies.
¹²^(V)Give me not up to the will of my adversaries;
    for ^(W)false witnesses have risen against me,
    and they ^(X)breathe out violence.

¹³I believe that I shall look^[f] upon ^(Y)the goodness of the Lord
    in ^(Z)the land of the living!
¹⁴^(AA)Wait for the Lord;
    ^(AB)be strong, and let your heart take courage;
    wait for the Lord!

2 Peter 1:13-21

¹³I think it right, as long as I am in this ^(A)body,^[a] ^(B)to stir you up by way of reminder, ¹⁴^(C)since I know that the putting off of my body will be soon, ^(D)as our Lord Jesus Christ made clear to me. ¹⁵And I will make every effort so that after my departure you may be able at any time to recall these things.

Christ's Glory and the Prophetic Word

¹⁶For we did not follow ^(E)cleverly devised ^(F)myths when we made known to you ^(G)the power and ^(H)coming of our Lord Jesus Christ, but ^(I)we were eyewitnesses of his majesty. ¹⁷For when he received honor and glory from God the Father, and the voice was borne to him by the Majestic Glory, ^(J)“This is my beloved Son,^[b] with whom I am well pleased,” ¹⁸we ourselves heard this very voice borne from heaven, for we were with him on ^(K)the holy mountain. ¹⁹And ^(L)we have the prophetic word more fully confirmed, to which you will do well to pay attention ^(M)as to a lamp shining in a dark place, until ^(N)the day ^(O)dawns and the morning star rises in your hearts, ²⁰knowing this first of all, that no prophecy of Scripture comes from someone's own interpretation. ²¹For ^(P)no prophecy was ever produced by the will of man, but men spoke from God ^(Q)as they were carried along by the Holy Spirit.

Mark 9:2-9

The Transfiguration

²^(A)And after six days Jesus took with him ^(B)Peter and James and John, and led them up a high mountain by themselves. And he was ^(C)transfigured before them, ³and ^(D)his clothes became radiant, intensely white, as no one^[a] on earth could bleach them. ⁴And there appeared to them Elijah with Moses, and they were talking with Jesus. ⁵And Peter said to Jesus, ^(E)“Rabbi,^[b] it is good that we are here. Let us make three ^(F)tents, one for you and one for Moses and one for Elijah.” ⁶For ^(G)he did not know what to say, for they were terrified. ⁷And ^(H)a cloud overshadowed them, and ^(I)a voice came out of the cloud, ^(J)“This is my beloved Son;^[c] ^(K)listen to him.” ⁸And suddenly, looking around, they no longer saw anyone with them but Jesus only.

⁹^(L)And as they were coming down the mountain, ^(M)he charged them to tell no one what they had seen, ^(N)until the Son of Man had risen from the dead.
